Men, It’s Time to Take Back Your Health!

November is Men’s Health Awareness Month – popularly known as Movember, a global initiative that spotlights the most prevalent health issues that affect men,  – in particular prostate and testicular cancer, and mental health. At every stage of life, men are encouraged to consider the three important aspects of their wellbeing – physical health, mental health, and social connection. ZOYA’s wellness experts share trusted advice and tips to enjoy a balanced life, full of vitality, in your 30s, 40s, 50s, and the golden years.

Don’t Underestimate the Power of Nutrition

From fasting, juicing, banting to keto, paleo, and the endless choice of supplements… Prioritising your diet is important because it directly impacts your overall wellbeing and productivity. Be conscious of buying and eating nutrient-dense foods (such as seafood, meat, seasonal vegetables and fruits), and avoid processed foods that are high in sugar, salt, unhealthy fats, artificial additives, and calories. The market is flooded with options on how to fix and balance common ailments, from natural remedies to over-the-counter quick-fixes. Be discerning when it comes to choosing a suppement regime, and don’t get caught up in the latest marketing fads.

Exercise Regularly

According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, heart disease is the leading cause of death among men. Regular exercise is one of the best ways to keep your heart strong and prevent heart disease. Try to get at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise, or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise, every week. For example, schedule five 30-minute sessions of exercise into your weekly regime.

Commit to Annual Health Check-ups

According to CANSA, prostate cancer is the most common cancer that affects men. For early detection and prevention, it is recommended that men should go for regular PSA (prostate specific antigen) testing from the age of 40. High-risk individuals should get PSA tests annually, and all men aged 50 and up should get tested bi-annually. Going for regular screenings helps establish a baseline for continued health monitoring, or as more acute health concerns arise.

Nurture Your Emotional Wellbeing

Health is more than just physical, and in your thirties and forties, the pressure of balancing work and family life can take its toll. It’s important to make time for self-care and nourishment, whether it be through regular exercise, time spent in nature, listening to music, or doing a hobby. Taking time to invest  in your emotional wellbeing leads to improved confidence and self-worth.  You also feel more positive about yourself and optimistic about the future.

Prioritise Your Mental Health

Anxiety disorders and depression are the most common mental health conditions among men, which, left untreated, can have a detrimental impact on physical and mental health. Men should find healthy ways to manage stress – such as exercise, relaxation techniques, or spending time with loved ones. During these low times, it is important not to isolate yourself – talk to  a friend or a professional counsellor, and share what you’re going through.

Research shows that people who experience loneliness are at increased risk of heart disease, stroke, anxiety, and depression. Maintaining social connection eases stress, and promotes a healthier immune system.

Cultivate a Positive Mindset

While a consistent and sustainable health regime is important to staying
well, making time for spontaneus, mood-enhancing activities is essential
when it comes to living a balanced life. Activities such as yoga and meditation
not only help clear the mind, they help with stress management, which in
turn reduces the risk of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity. ZOYA’s customised wellness retreats include holistic practises and rejuvenating rituals designed to bring the body and mind back
to balance.

You can never be overcautious when it comes to your health. Take charge of your wellness and boost your quality of life by eating clean, going for important annual screenings, making time for exercise and sleep, and reducing stress.

DID YOU KNOW?

Movember is a combination of the diminutive word for moustache – “mo” and “November”. It was started by two Australian friends, Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, who wanted to revive the moustache trend by bringing attention to the importance of men’s health. The initiative quickly garnered support, and this year Movember celebrates its 20th anniversary.
